15 Sep Apple’s latest iPhone OS 3.1 upgrade

These last few days, we’ve received numerous complaints about Apple’s last iPhone upgrade. Unfortunately, this upgrade disables the tethering functionality, for all operators.

All you iPhone users who have upgraded their phone to OS 3.1 have noticed indeed this upgrade has disabled the tethering function there was before. Apple has decided to put an end to the possibility to share the internet connection with your laptop. This is not only the case for jailbroken or hacked phones, even the officially unlocked phones are impacted. As it turns out, Belgian iPhone users are not the only ones dealing with this problem. The Netherlands and the VS would also be impacted by the problem (read more on tweakers or on the official Apple site (look for footnote 5 especially)).

This action from Apple appears to be triggered by operators, like Mobistar, who are not happy with tethering. They prefer to sell their customers a second SIM card for their laptop. This would mean also Mobistar customers loose the tethering function when upgrading to OS 3.1.
Some people claim tethering is only disabled for non-Mobistar customers. We highly doubt this, as this would make it illegal to sell the iPhone in Belgium. Should you know someone who can demonstrate an iPhone OS 3.1 that can use tethering on a Mobistar SIM card, we would like to see it. It would give us legal grounds to reclaim the functionality for all other operators.

Downgrading will not help, as Apple has made it impossible for the 3GS to downgrade back to 3.0.

Regrettably, there is not much we can do. Apple decided to cripple its own product. We have contacted them, but we don’t expect a reply. The more people asking Apple to bring back tethering, the better our chances!

    Jailbreaken en MiWi gebruiken,(creert een hotspot) gebruiken het met de ploeg om iedereen te laten surfen ook op uitwedstrijden

    Hoi,

    Ik heb zopas mijn iPhone op 3.1 gezet maar ben het provider-logo van MV kwijt. Kan je deze terugzetten of gaat dat niet?

    Heel vreemd bij mijn iPhone 3GS werkt tethering wel nog op OS 3.1.

    Ik moet er wel bij zeggen, ik ben van 3.0 jailbreaked met purplera1n naar custom 3.1 via PwnageTool 3.1.3 (dus ook jailbreak).
    iPhone 3GS is een simlockvrij van mobi$tar.

    Ok, nog vreemder, ik was wat voorbaarig. Tethering-optie was er nog kon hem opzetten op de iPhone. Dus ik test het even verbind enkel via USB met m'n mac, geeft netjes melding vraagt om netwerk voorkeuren open te doen, daar staat de iPhone-verbinding tussen die er voorheen niet stond, maar geeft daar een fout aan, apparaat niet via USB verbonden of...
    Ik probeer nog een paar keer zonder succes en beslis dan maar via bluetooth, geeft netjes melding vraagt om netwerk voorkeuren open te doen... maar mislukt ook weer ga uit m'n voorkeuren (op iPhone) ga er terug in en tethering is verdwenen...

    Deze voormiddag een goed gesprek gehad met een medewerker van de juridische dienst van Test-Aankoop. Ondanks dat ik geen lid ben van hun organisatie heeft hij toch ruimschoots de tijd genomen om mijn verhaal te aanhoren. Hij kon me bevestigen dat hetgeen Apple hier presteert volgens hem volgens de Belgische wetgeving inderdaad niet wettelijk is. Hij ging de zaak voorleggen aan het afdelingshoofd om te kijken of ze hier verder op in kunnen gaan, maar heeft me gelijk ook al geadviseerd om klacht neer te leggen bij de Inspectie van de Federale Overheidsdienst Economie.

    op iPhoneclub staat een goede handleiding om het opnieuw in the schakelen, je moet er voolopig wel nog een jailbraik voor uitvoeren!

    Pour ceux qui ne savent pas installer le fichier .ipcc:

    * Fermer iTunes

    * Appuyez sur Windows+R (invite de commandes)

    * Tapez (en plusieurs lignes):
    ..cd
    ..cd
    cd Program Files
    cd iTunes
    iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    * Validez et relancez maintenant iTunes
